Are there any insects for freshwater community aquariums?

I've had freshwater tanks my entire life. One of my only complaints with this hobby is it seems there are fewer non-fish options for freshwater tanks vs. saltwater. I know there's a handful of tiny shrimp, crayfish, and snails that one can keep in a freshwater tank. I was wondering if there were any other unusual creatures you could keep with medium-sized, active, community fish. (i.e. clams, water-boatmen, ect.)
