Hints a guy likes you?

So i like my best friend and on the first week of summer he started flirting with me and winky faced me on my facebook status where everyone could see and even asked me to hang out, but then he stopped. Now he says I'm pretty and that he barely even recognized me when he saw me because of how much prettier I've gotten. But I saw him the other day and he didn't talk to me but he kept looking at me and his other best friend who he was standing beside at the time looked back at me, smiled, then looked at him. he is really shy though. idk are all guys like this? confusing?
